In 2015, Eileen O’Connor, co-founder of the EM Radiation Research Trust, and Susan Foster, a respected medical writer and honorary firefighter from the USA, delivered a critical presentation at Liverpool University. Together, they raised urgent concerns about the health risks posed by electromagnetic radiation from wireless technologies warnings that have only grown more relevant.
Separated by an ocean but united in purpose, their advocacy highlighted:
• Scientific evidence linking RF-EMF exposure to biological effects and increased cancer risks
• The outdated and insufficient nature of current exposure limits
• The essential need for independent, transparent research
• The importance of public awareness and policy reform guided by the Precautionary Principle

Despite these early warnings, Liverpool has since become home to the largest 5G mesh network in the UK and the second largest in the world. This rapid expansion raises urgent questions about public health and safety. https://liverpool5g.org.uk/
In the Wake of Tragedy, an Urgent Call to Examine Environmental Risks
One year ago today, 16 July 2024, the EM Radiation Research Trust called for an independent investigation into a phone mast beside Millstead Primary School in Liverpool, following the tragic and unexplained deaths of two young children.
Millstead, a special needs school, sits next to a 4G-LTE mast where independent expert Glynn Hughes recorded the highest peak RF radiation levels ever measured in the UK: 1,554,932 µW/m². While the UK Health Security Agency ruled out infectious disease as the cause, no independent inquiry has been conducted into environmental factors including prolonged RF-EMF exposure despite our calls for investigation. We are not claiming causation, but we firmly believe this situation warrants urgent investigation. The public has a right to transparency, precaution, and accountability especially when it involves vulnerable children and exposure in residential areas.
These high radiation peak level readings align with findings by Professor Lennart Hardell and Mona Nilsson of the Swedish Radiation Protection Foundation, whose case studies document 16 individuals (ages 4 to 83) developing microwave syndrome shortly after exposure to 5G base stations. Symptoms included insomnia, headaches, fatigue, memory issues, skin irritation, and cardiovascular irregularities all consistent with previously reported RF-related health effects.

The continuous 24/7 exposure of the public particularly vulnerable children to non-ionising radiation necessitates an immediate, independent investigation and raises serious concerns about the adequacy and continued relevance of current ICNIRP guidelines in safeguarding public health.
The Cancer Warning Grows Stronger
In 2011, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified RF radiation as a Group 2B “possible human carcinogen” the same category as lead and DDT. This was a key point raised by O’Connor and Foster in 2015.
There is growing international concern and a substantial body of scientific evidence, including:
• The U.S. National Toxicology Program’s $30 million study, which found clear evidence of cancer in animals exposed to mobile phone radiation
• The Ramazzini Institute’s Italian study, which confirmed similar cancer outcomes at significantly lower exposure levels
In 2025, a new systematic review published in Environmental Research, concluding that RF radiation causes cancer in laboratory animals a finding that has intensified calls from doctors and independent scientists to reclassify RF as a Group 1 known human carcinogen.

The science has strengthened. The warnings are louder. The risks are no longer theoretical. Despite this, the UK is pressing ahead with BT’s £230 billion 5G expansion plan by 2035. Yet the potential cost to vulnerable populations and public health may be far greater. The EM Radiation Research Trust has called on MPs to halt the rollout over serious safety concerns. Meanwhile, in the USA, over 50 bills to expand wireless infrastructure are under federal review. Critics warn these bills overlook safer fiber-optic alternatives, restrict local community rights, and increase risks from greater RF exposure.

The Call to Act Responsibly
The EM Radiation Research Trust urges:
• A moratorium on new wireless infrastructure near schools and residential areas until proven safe
• Updated RF exposure limits based on the latest independent science, not outdated guidelines
• Full public transparency on mast emissions, exclusion zones, and insurance liabilities
• Adoption of the EUROPAEM EMF 2016 Guidelines for diagnosis and prevention of EMF-related illness
Thousands of peer-reviewed studies now demonstrate harm well below current international safety limits. The health of our children and communities must never be put at risk for technological convenience.
From Past to Present: The Warning Still Stands
As 5G and wireless networks expand at unprecedented speed, the voices who raised concerns a decade ago grow ever more urgent. The global population especially children and vulnerable groups deserve protection, transparency, and accountability.
It is not too late to:
• Protect vulnerable communities
• Embrace the Precautionary Principle
• Hold decision-makers accountable
Listen to the science. Listen to those affected. The time to act is now.
