Giant mobile phone mast plan in Sutton Park slammed by residents and councillors as ‘outrageous’

A proposal for a huge mobile phone mast and compound at a popular Birmingham beauty spot has been slammed by residents and councillors. Plans have been revealed for the current EE and Three mobile phone mast, which sits above Atlas House in Belwell Lane, to be moved to the Four Oaks Gate entrance to Sutton Park.

Its current site, an office block, is due to be demolished to make way for a new Aldi store. But concerns have been raised the mobile companies are looking to place 25-metre high monopole with antennas and cabinets in a National Nature Reserve which is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The mast would be placed behind a lodge building next to the car park at the entrance to the park, which is accessed off Four Oaks Road.

That site is at the top of ‘Cardiac Hill’, an infamous climb out of the park used during the Sutton Fun Run. The phone mast would include six antennas, two 60cm transmission dishes and seven equipment cabinets. And it would be designed to look like a cypress tree. The mast would be climbable and in a ‘fenced-off compound’.

Cllr Maureen Cornish (Four Oaks, Cons.) has said she is against the proposals and any development like this could open the park up for further building. While residents have said the mast is likely to have a ‘detrimental effect on all of us’, raising concerns about it being an eyesore in the park.
