High Cell Phone Use May Impact Sperm Count, Study Says
The largest cross sectional study to examine cell phone use and sperm count was published in the journal Fertility & Sterility entitled “Association between self-reported mobile phone use and the semen quality of young men” found men between the ages of 18 and 22 who said they used their phones more than 20 times a day had a lower sperm count, below the World Health Organization reference values for fertile men.
Researchers from the University of Geneva, along with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, looked at data from 2,886 men.
“We know enough to know that cell phone radiation exposure should be reduced to protect fertility. Cell phones do not belong in the pants pocket. Numerous experimental studies show harm to reproduction from damaged sperm to erectile dysfunction to decreased testosterone,” stated Dr. Devra Davis Ph.D, MPH, President of Environmental Health Trust. I am one of hundreds of scientists that recommend reducing cell phone radiation exposure due to the clear evidence of harm even at legally allowed levels.”
“The issue of sperm and reproductive damage was central to EHT’s lawsuit against the FCC wherein the U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. ordered the FCC to address the science on health effects such as sperm damage and impacts to the reproductive system, stated Theodora Scarato, Executive Director the Environmental Health Trust. “The FCC has failed to respond to the court order. We continue to send hundreds of studies to the FCC requesting they address cell phone radiation health effects.”
