“Predatory Delay”

by Kent Chamberlain, PhD

Predatory Delay” is “the blocking or slowing of needed change, in order to make money off unsustainable, unjust systems…”, and that is exactly what telecom is doing with regards to the negative health impacts of wireless radiation. They are following in the footsteps of other industries, such as tobacco and asbestos, so that they can continue raking in profits for as long as they can, regardless of the harm that their products may cause. The longer they can delay, the more money they will make, and that appears to be all that they care about.

The wireless industry is following the playbook used by other industries, as documented in this Harvard University Center for Ethics report. That playbook calls for the spending of huge sums on advertising, lobbying, campaign contributions, and paying for “experts” who are willing to support their claims of no harm. The advertisement above stating that cigarettes do not cause cancer is a classic example of how the playbook is implemented. The playbook’s key insight is that an industry doesn’t have to win the scientific argument about safety; it only has to keep the argument going for as long as it can. We all need to keep this in mind as we hear industry make their claims about wireless radiation being harmless.

Dr. Kent Chamberlain is Past Chair and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), and Past President of Environmental Health Trust (EHT). He served on a formal New Hampshire state commission tasked with exploring the health and environmental impacts of wireless radiation. That commission, convened through bipartisan legislation and approved by the governor, determined that there were significant harms associated with wireless radiation exposure and made recommendations for ways to protect the public against it. Dr. Chamberlin has actively served on or chaired more than thirty committees and commissions throughout his academic career, including influential advisory boards and public health commissions, underscoring his extensive commitment to advancing policy in technology, education, and environmental health. As a Senior Life Member of IEEE, he has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, contributed presentations to major international conferences, and serves as a Special Expert on the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF).
