A mayor in Italy in 2016 ordered the removal of wireless networks from municipal schools, replacing them with wired internet connections amid ongoing concerns about children’s exposure to electromagnetic fields.
A small municipality in Italy has drawn international attention after its mayor took the decision to remove Wi-Fi from municipal schools and replace it with Ethernet-based wired connections.
According to reporting by Flavia Marinho, the move was taken in response to concerns about children’s exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from wireless technologies. Full credit is given to the Mayor for acting on these concerns within an educational setting, adopting a precautionary approach while wider questions about long-term exposure continue to be debated internationally.
The decision sparked significant discussion, with supporters viewing it as a protective step for children and a practical application of precaution in school environments.
What is clear is that concern about wireless exposure in schools continues to emerge in different parts of the world, particularly in relation to children and the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure.
This approach stands in contrast to current UK policy direction, where government-led initiatives continue to expand wireless connectivity in schools and public buildings. The divergence highlights a growing international difference in how precaution, risk, and children’s long-term exposure to wireless technologies are being interpreted in policy and practice.
The EM Radiation Research Trust is calling on the UK Government to adopt this precautionary approach in schools, prioritising wired connectivity and reducing unnecessary wireless exposure for children.
This action reflects growing global concern about children’s exposure to wireless radiation. A coordinated international response is now urgently needed, including consideration of a worldwide action on Wi-Fi in schools and a shift to safer wired alternatives.
