Beatrice-Alexandra-GolombJust ahead of consideration of SB.649 by the CA Appropriations Committee this week, a renowned UC San Diego Professor, Dr. Beatrice Golumb, MD, PhD, who heads the Golumb Research Group, warns of health and biological risks from wireless technology and calls for “safer, wired and well-shielded technology.”

“Those who are affected are in desperate need of protection by our elected officials.

They need creation of safe spaces and housing, and roadways to allow travel, not removal of any prospect of one; protection of local rights to make decisions – not removal of any recourse or ability to avoid what injures them. They are far more strongly in need of protections than a great many protected classes – their problems arose due to actions of others, against which they were given no control – and can be reversed, in most cases, if the assault on them is rolled back. Through no fault of their own, and in some cases against their will (e.g. before opt out was permitted with smart meters), they were subjected to an exposure that has altered their lives as they knew them, and forced them – needlessly – to the margins of society.

Let our focus be on safer, wired and well shielded technology – not more wireless.

Dr. Golomb is Professor of Medicine and Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and a renowned researcher well known for her work on Gulf War Syndrome and on adverse effects of statin cholesterol medications, or fluoroquinolone antibiotics. She served as a primary care physician for veterans for two decades, and as a Health Consultant at RAND. She holds a BS in physics, summa cum laude (with graduate fellowship offers in physics to Harvard and Cal Tech, at age 19); and earned an MD and PhD at UC San Diego (during which she gave vaulting lessons to Francis Crick). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Computational Neurobiology Laboratory at the Salk Institute, a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholarship at RAND/UCLA and received a Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Physician Faculty Scholar Award. She is a member of the Cochrane Adverse Effects Committee and has been named a foreign fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Dr. Golomb’s interests span research methods and inference from evidence, and the balance of treatment risks and benefits, as well as relation of oxidative stress and mitochondrial function to health, behavior, illness, medication effects, nutrition and aging and environmental injury – extending to recent study of genetic and biological correlates of health effects of electromagnetic radiation.

Other letters have poured in opposing SB.649 from 50 environmental, health and social justice organizations, groups like the AARP with 3.3 million members in CA and 271 CA cities and towns, 45 of 52 CA counties (85%), 47 Planning and Municipal Organizations.
