Adequate hygiene practices are an implicit part of culture as a sign of respect. Although we can smell the foul fumes we emit after sweating and exhaustion, we do appreciate our neighbor’s personal hygiene considerations. It is also a benefit to resist the urge to apply poisons willingly with known chemical carcinogens. Implementing a hygiene practice can often cross the line between selfish pursuits and selflessness for society’s benefit. Having a reasonable personal hygiene directly benefits personal charisma. Each of us is able to tolerate our own rank smells, bad breath and other not-to-be-mentioned behaviors.

Out of our olfactory perceptions, many of us also practice hygiene in other forms. For instance, most people have a strong safety hygiene. In thinking about the road rules when driving an auto, we typically obey traffic laws, stop at red lights, watch our speed, slow down more when weather influences the roadways and give pedestrians and cyclists more time. Our automobile hygiene varies from one individual to the next, but we have these laws in place to help minimize more dangerous situations that could occur if we were to slack off and disregard other people.

As you can see, hygiene is about oneself to an extent, but even more about the others we interact with in our society. Many times in the past, I have been around cigarette smokers and joined in conversations with them. Each smoker has a varying degree of hygiene when it comes to the people they smoke around. Observing that I am a non-smoker, most smokers I’ve been around have been very mindful to blow the smoke away from me. Inherently, most want to minimize the potential poison to others, just as the non-smoker typically looks to stand in a location that is not downwind from the exhaust. The hygiene practice is usually unspoken.

Another form of hygiene that is yet to be practiced widely is a new term I am calling “EMF Hygiene.” As another safety hygiene, it is much harder for people to recognize the exposures and intensities of electromagnetic fields because they are invisible to the naked eye. A structure like a cell phone tower or WiFi router emit radio-frequencies, while being in closer proximity to a powerline or most household appliances generate manmade magnetic and electrical fields. Electromagnetic fields, because of their widespread proliferation within many environments in our modern era, are harder to mitigate and escape like no time before in all of our history.

For example, going to a movie theater now in 2017 compared to just 10 years ago in 2007 translates into far more milliWatts of radio-frequency exposure in the air on average. The reasoning is that in 2007, most cell phones were using 2G or 3G networks. 4G came about in 2008 and gave us better connectivity and transmission of data frequently.  Commonly, cell phone to cell tower interactions occur every 10 second on average on 4G networks. These radio-frequency transmissions occur even when a phone is not being actively used, thereby bringing in radio-frequency EMFs into a space. In a packed movie theater of about three-hundred 3G users in 2007, there would be little to know radio frequency in the air if no one is using their phones. But now in 2017 with nearly everyone using 4G, those same three-hundred people unknowingly generate a lot of radio-frequency in a smaller space even though everyone is watching the movie and not actively on a phone call or texting.

The only way to shutdown the radio-frequency is Airplane Mode or shutting off the phone altogether to stop the RF EMF transmissions to and from the cell tower. Airplane Mode has become a bit more than ironic, since most airlines have also installed WiFi in commercial flights along with everyone using their cell phones in a narrow metal tube where it is hard for the RF EMFs to escape. The radio frequencies, as a form of EMF, are able to reflect and absorb. RF EMFs can find their way into materials, including organic.

Aside from radio frequency EMFs, manmade magnetic and electrical fields are all around us. These fields penetrate matter and have a square-root falloff of intensity from the source. Wires, powerlines, motors, computers, computer screens, computer speakers, overhead lights with dimmer switches, fluorescent bulbs, and yes, even mobile phones produce these fields. Some fields like from an alarm clock’s LED, a hair dryer, electric razor, or a vacuum cleaner might have a 3 to 5-foot radius magnetic field falloff before the EMF vanishes from an EMF detector.

In a great number of scientific studies, it has been shown for many decades that many forms of human-generated EMFs can influence many living systems including melatonin loss, mitochondrial stress and even direct DNA damage. Although the observational science goes quite deep, that is left up to the reader to pursue the additional details that may interest you. Assuming the reader believes artificial EMFs can be a problem for one’s long-term health, there are many easy steps that can be taken to build one’s EMF Hygiene.

Implementing a hygiene practice implies the disinfection and removal of a toxin for building health or preventing the greater likelihood of disease formation. For this issue, it must start in the observation of the EMFs before they can be contained. Starting at square one would be places or devices that have been termed as ‘smart’, since they have a higher intensities of human-generated EMFs. Over the past one-hundred years, humanity easily forgot its past and has come to expect a lowered quality of life and a lowered life expectancy. Back in early 20th Century, the exposures to artificial EMFs were somewhat contained and were generally isolated to specific environments from the main power grid. As the EMF density grew in the air with the use of radar, microwaves, radio, television and other radio-frequencies, the population accepted the unbound EMFs as harmless. Naiveté is another human condition not to be overlooked.

The combinational impact of an increasing power grid and radio-frequency growth established a respectable connection to disease rates. Somehow, the vast majority of humanity has attributed the accelerated disease rates to other factors. In pursuit of wanting something science-fiction-like, many of have gambled with a shorter lifespan without looking deeper into the biophysics. Most civilizations take a logical approach by testing new devices and the use of their physics by placing caution before potential destruction.

The best course of action to understand EMF hygiene is to bring along EMF detection equipment to reveal the invisible toxins when needed to those that are completely unaware of the issue. This logical course of action could still draw great resistance due to the addictive light wavelengths and frequencies built into most of humanity’s technology. It is fascinating to see how we are becoming a more primitive world as we promote ourselves as “modernized,” when it is quite clear we are suffering more diseases in greater numbers than ever before. We have a lot to learn from our grandparents and the generations before us.

What appears to keep humanity thriving is the smaller subgroup of people that understand the depth of this science on both fronts: the light physics of the EM spectrum and the biological interactions with the light physics. Many scientists are guilty of not pursuing a deeper understanding of processes and systems backed up by repeatable observation. Luckily, our subgroup realizes the global risks of EMF proliferation, but shunned to most of the world and take a larger risk in exposing the scientifically measurable intersection to humanity’s health. Most of us in the population find it foolish and absurd to mitigate the artificial EMFs simply because they have not read the in-depth literature on the subject. Others resist because it would cause annoyance to the behaviors of modern humanity and our love of technology.

It should be obvious to the reader, we could benefit from new practices that reduce down our exposures to electromagnetic fields, if we so desire. However, because the bulk of the population is extremely unaware of this issue or don’t believe it is a problem, it often requires the person seeking a cleaner EMF hygiene to keep away from populations and locations with higher EMF densities. Just like cigarette smoke in the air, once a person is able to measure what’s going on in certain environments, it becomes as clear as day.

Hopefully in the coming decade, humanity will pursue a more logical and rational path for the survival of our species. A solid starting point would be to test our technology before it is rushed to the market against the intersections of the many biological systems that are influenced by EMFs. Until society becomes more aware of this issue, those people that are trying to mitigate these EMFs can feel isolated or restricted in their movements around in the modern world and in population centers. In the meantime, those that practice a safer EMF hygiene may be the ones that continue humanity’s future generations.
